Elden Ring Soft Caps: Attribute Breakpoints

Find where Vigor, Mind, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith and Arcane generally begin returning less per point. The important distinction is what you are measuring: Endurance stamina and equip load, for example, do not have the same breakpoint. Spell scaling is not automatically the same as weapon scaling.

What is a soft cap in Elden Ring?

A soft cap is a change in an attribute’s marginal return. Additional levels may still help, but each point tends to produce less improvement for the selected effect. It is not a rule that every stat must stop at that value, nor a guarantee that you should spend the next point elsewhere. The hard displayed attribute limit is 99.

One example from the publisher’s published guide: 40 Vigor gives 1,450 HP, 60 Vigor gives 1,900 HP and 99 Vigor gives 2,100 HP before any additional contextual effects. This demonstrates diminishing returns after 60, not that Vigor stops working entirely.

Source and scope: this table paraphrases the Bandai Namco Elden Ring Advanced Stats guide (July 19, 2023). Its simplified breakpoints are general gameplay guidance, not independent Regulation 1.17.3 validation or actual per-weapon/calibration curves. See the validation record before treating any experimental combat tool as patch-certified.

Elden Ring soft caps table: all eight attributes

Read each row as stat + effect, not a blanket stat maximum. For example, Endurance has two rows because its stamina and equip-load returns change at different points. These are approximate explanations from the publisher’s historical guide, not current-patch marginal-gain curves.

Publisher-described general attribute breakpoints grouped by return type
AttributeEffect measuredApproximate soft capsScope and limitations
VigorHP40 / 60The official example reports 1,450 HP at 40 VIG, 1,900 at 60 and 2,100 at 99. Exact intermediate HP is not modeled.
MindFP60The publisher describes strong FP growth around 35–50 Mind and a clear slowdown beyond 60. Do not mistake a useful flask target for a universal damage cap.
EnduranceStamina50Stamina returns slow at about 50 END. This does not describe the equip load curve.
EnduranceEquip load60Equip-load growth has a separate later breakpoint at about 60 END. Check your actual game-displayed max load in the equip calculator.
StrengthWeapon scaling20 / 55 / 80Approximate damage-stat guide. The benefit depends on the specific weapon, affinity and its actual scaling curve; two-handing has a separate effective-Strength rule.
DexterityWeapon scaling20 / 55 / 80Approximate damage-stat guide, not a promise of specific Attack Rating. Casting speed is a separate Dexterity effect.
IntelligenceWeapon scaling20 / 50 / 80Weapon scaling; not identical to the sorcery-scaling return of a particular staff.
IntelligenceSorcery scaling60 / 80General spell-tool scaling guide; staff choice, scaling stats and upgrade level determine actual result.
FaithWeapon scaling20 / 50 / 80Weapon scaling; not identical to the incantation scaling of a selected seal.
FaithIncantation scaling60 / 80General casting-tool guide; individual seals and multi-stat scaling can behave differently.
ArcaneWeapon scaling20 / 50 / 80Official broad weapon-scaling example. Do not apply this sequence automatically to Blood Loss or Poison buildup.
ArcaneSpell-tool scaling30 / 45This is the publisher’s Arcane casting-tool guide, not an Arcane status-buildup or item-discovery cap.

Every breakpoint must be read in context. Strength and Dexterity weapon numbers are approximate, while weapon and spell-tool curves may be equipment-dependent. How many attribute points until the next breakpoint?

Select a specific effect, enter your current attribute value and get the next reference breakpoint. The number of points required is exact subtraction; the damage, HP, FP or status return from those points is not estimated.

Select a category and calculate.

This is a reference planner, not an exact derived-stat calculator. Actual HP, FP, weapon attack, incantation scaling and status application require different source curves. Plan the eight-attribute allocation or reallocate an existing level budget after reviewing the result.

Eight attributes, different returns: what you should compare

Vigor: HP, not damage

The publisher’s practical health thresholds are 40 and 60 VIG. You should check how much survivability you need, rather than applying a damage-stat scaling rule to Vigor. The guide’s 40/60/99 HP examples describe this specific return.

Mind: FP for spells and skills

Mind determines focus points. The historical publisher guide highlights strong FP gains around 35–50, with slowing returns beyond 60. A personal flask refill breakpoint or the FP required by a summon is a use case, not automatically a universal soft cap.

Endurance: stamina and weight have different curves

About 50 Endurance is a stamina breakpoint; the weight-capacity breakpoint is about 60. More maximum equip load only matters to your dodge tier in combination with the weight of your actual equipped gear. The equip load calculator checks the strictly-under-30% and strictly-under-70% roll boundaries separately.

Strength and Dexterity: equipment decides the value

The publisher describes approximate weapon-scaling changes around 20, 55 and 80 for both attributes. Actual damage depends on weapon identity, upgrade, affinity, scaling grade and stats. Two-handing changes effective Strength for eligible mechanics, not Dexterity. None of these numbers certify weapon AR or DPS in a particular patch.

Intelligence and Faith: weapon scaling versus casting tool scaling

For the broad publisher explanation, weapon returns have reference points around 20, 50 and 80, while general sorcery/incantation catalyst guidance uses 60 and 80. The selected staff or sacred seal can use its own combination of scaling attributes; a weapon breakpoint cannot simply be copied into a specific spell’s actual damage.

Arcane: do not mix spell, weapon and status returns

The publisher gives a broad weapon-scaling reference at 20, 50 and 80, but the Arcane spell-tool reference at 30 and 45. Blood Loss, Poison, Discovery and other effects use different rules and eligibility. This table intentionally gives no universal Blood Loss status cap or invented buildup value.

Common questions about Elden Ring stat caps

Are soft caps the maximum attribute value?

No. Soft caps describe slowing returns for a particular effect. The usual displayed limit for an attribute is 99; the hard limit and practical stopping point are different ideas.

Is 60 Vigor mandatory for every build?

No. The publisher’s health example shows why 40 and 60 are useful reference points, but the allocation depends on your level, equipment, survivability needs and playstyle. This page does not label one allocation universally optimal.

Do all weapon damage stats have an identical cap?

No. There are broad reference breakpoints, but exact scaling curves change with weapons, affinities and casting tools. A table of general breakpoints must not be used as an exact AR calculator.

Can I use this page to calculate exact HP, FP or damage?

No. Only the publisher’s explicitly reported Vigor HP milestones are quoted. The interactive result reports the number of attribute points needed to reach a stated reference breakpoint—not actual HP, attack, status buildup or runes.

How many runes does reaching a soft cap cost?

That depends on your current character level and all eight attributes, not just the one stat being increased. First model your target in the Build Planner; then check level-up rune costs for the resulting level interval.
